I have a CPI EB.

I have come close many a time of overheating my engine going by when i open the hood I hear sizzling noise and the steam makes those fog patches along the bonnet and the front panel.

I have had it off the radar sometimes and it still keeps running.

What actually happens when your car overheats, like what damage can i expect. I am thinking of getting a new car this year so Im am not going to fix it.

Depends on how bad it over heats and what happens after it over heats - i.e. throw some ice cold water on the warm engine and you can prolly watch the metal crack!
suprised your head gasket hasn't gone.

As for fixing it, shouldn't be hard, start by putting some mukout or some other sort of cooling system cleaner/flush, follow the instructions, replace thermostate, new coolant. check your thermo fan's running. if it's still over heating after that then I'd say it's time for a new radiator, must be blocked or soemthing and new radiator hoses. there isn't really much more to the cooling system...

That’s the thing, I have had it pressure tested last time it got serviced in November. The said it was a likely to be a head gasket. I asked what it would cost to fix it and they said $600, so I figure that by the time I pay the rego due tomorrow, the insurance plus the $600 I might as well get a newer EF/EL.

I just would like to know what I can/should except, summer is nearly over and I think winter will be my saviour.

I am not going to bother to fix it, just wondering what would happen when it goes.

but how does a head gasket cause it to over heat? it can't. the head gasket goign would cause the fluid to leak out the engine between the head and the block or into the bores or into the oil gallaries or soemthing, but I don't see how it coudl cause the engine to over heat (unless all your fluid is leaking out and your running the car with no fluid!!!).
So is all your fluid disapearing? if not then I'd start checking the cooling system as I said above...

Well it loses a little bit but not heaps and heaps.
Which leads to the next question, can I detach the battery for a day then re-attach it, hoping that this will have some effect on the thermostat, like maybe the senses are wrong and need to be re-learned or something?
Probably a stupid question I just would like to know

Nah that won't do anything with the cooling system ...

a. it is highly unlikely that your head gasket is causing the over heating issues, so I'd suggest you flush the cooling system, change the thermostate, check your fan is coming on, etc.
b. thermostat isn't eletrical, it's mechanical and opens at temperature.
c. the temperature sensor is what provides a reading to the gauge. unlikely that disconnecting the battery will do s**t (as when the car is off it doesn't get any power so it's makes no difference if the battery is connected or not, either way it ain't getting power). if you think it's faulty then replace it.

Thanks I will check everything.

Also what does ‘Pressure Testing’ mean?

Remove your coolant tank cap, put a bike tyre pump in the opening and seal it off somehow, pump some preassure into the system and see if any coolant comes out of the radiator or any hoses etc

Ok on the weekend I really got stuck into the cooling system.

First dropped all the water. Then I ran some cleaner through the car for 45 mins. Then it was still over heating or getting bloody warm so I changed the thermostat. On the way back from Home yesterday the cars temp never went below N on the heat gauge. All the hoses are alright, I changed the cap, the car is full coolant.

I think that its is the Radiator?

But what has me concerned is that if I do get a new radiator It still wont change anything. Its just that it got pressure tested on in November and they believed it to be a possible head gasket. Is it hard to do a radiator yourself and what would it cost for a second-hand one out of a EB GL?

stuff for the cooling i will never buy 2nd hand,it's not worth the risk.

pressure testing will not always indicate that anything is wrong.

buy a new radiator reflush the system before putting radiator in and refill with clean water and a good glycol anti corrosion mix.

see how it goes.
