driving home from work last night after the car was at running temp i stopped at a shop with engine off. got back in and drove off, the car felt weird as in no power and was stuck in 2nd, it didnt kick up or down gears. i heard no weird noises. i then stopped and re started engine it was fine after that. its an EL fairmont ghia, the fluid is good and at correct level is it normal for this or should i be worried???

Sure it wasnt in 3rd?
If the transmission goes into limited operation strategy (limp home) then you'll get nothing but 3rd gear. Can be caused by all sorts of things.... Otherwise may be some probs with bands but would need to monitor the box and see how it goes.

is your battery ok? sometimes a almost-dead battery can cause the trans to go into limp home mode.

it could have been 3rd but couldnt really tell, but took off slow but not that slow, was on 60kmh at 3000rpm. anyway ill get the bands checked. the battery was ok as it started.

Yes I agree, a mate of mine had a this problem it was battery related, a crook connection at the battery.

speaking to a mate today that used to repair autos told me that the comp can pick up a bug and put it into limp mode and its as simple as restarting the engine.

Absolutely. I guess the question is - what made the ECU go for limp-home? If it doesnt bother you again then i'd count it as a 'one off'. If keeps ocurring then obviously something needs sorting out.
