i was changing 1 of the lifters ova and i dropped a shim in to the valve spring
 :S
my problem is i dont know how to get it out. i cant see it. or put anything magnetic in there to try and get it. what r my options here? please help.

do you have a vavle spring compresser? prob your best bet to pump compressed air into the cly, use a valve spring compressor, take the spring out, and remove the shim
|

ok i dont have compressors or an air compressor im f**k.
whats below the spring? can the shim work its way further down in to the motor?

no the shim cant work its way further down unless it goes down an oil gallery... but to do that it would need to be removed from the spring

ok ive got some spring compressors now.
but dont really have access to a air compressor. can i compress the spring without pumping up the cyl ? cheers for the help.

sounds like a bit of a problem...
any chance of compressing the spring and getting to it from underneath, or is the air compressor needed like alted said..??

is it sitting trapped inside the spring but still ontop of the head?
not sure how heavy a shim is? if you can get access to any air compresser would it be possible to dislodge it and maybe knock it free with compressed air?

ive done this before with my dads 351, removing the valve springs some people say you need an air compressor, NOT TRUE!!!, you UNDO all the rockers, take out all the sparkplugs, turn the crank so the cylinder you droped the shim on top of is TDC (top dead centre), when you take out the spring, the valve will fall abit (about half - 3/4 of an inch) and hit the top of the piston...easy job that will take abit of time, nothin to stress bout

wind motor over so the cyl in question is at TDC, take plug out, feed fishing line or something into cylinder. Valve shouldnt drop at all then

fishing line to fill the cylinder with *something* if something is in the way, then the valve can't fall anywhere.
shims are pretty light, you may be able to blow it out or even fiddle with it with something thin to get it out.

yeh i think i see jaysen doing something like that when putting the cam into voxaces car, cos the air compressor was shot

but if the piston is TDC, the valve will fall and hit the top of the piston!, the valve stem will NOT fall through the valve retainer (head)...therefore dont need hooks, lines and sinkers

You crank (by hand) the piston to just below TDC. Feed a power cable (I used an old extension lead with the plug cut off the end) into the cyl. via the spark plug hole. Crank piston until cable is tight up against the valve (head). This way the vale dose not drop at all. By the way is the valve spring tool a head on or head off type?
