The alternator on my EF is making a bit of a knocking noise, so I removed the drive belt to see if I could narrow down the noise. Started the car, and it would barely run, I needed to pump the accelerator to keep it running, and it wouldn't rev.
Has anyone else done this, is this just a problem with my car??? I would imagine that the battery would have enough charge in it to keep the car running for a little while with out the alternator running, after all it has enough charge to start the car… Cheers |

I think after the car starts, the alternator produces most of the direct power to the engine and if you measure the voltage on the battery, its higher when the alternator is going rather than when the engine is off.

The car should run - i had an EB come in on the graveyard shift last weekend that had just shredded it's belt. we don't stock any, so he drove on!

May suggest the battery has seen better days?

I'd agree with that diagnosis!

It wouldnt be anything to do with the ecu would it? Mabey regestering a low charge and going into fail safe?? Not sure but just throwing around some ideas!

i can't imagine the battery lasting all that long once there's no charge going back to it. could be that it's a different load on the motor and the ecu has sensed it - with belt off you're not running AC, Power steering and the like

Yeah, I've had mine running with out any belts.

Not really sure, I was just trying to make sure it wasn't a common problem. I'm running a Wolf 3d, so maybe it needs a bit more of a charge to keep running, but really shouldn't
If it was a faulty battery, you would think it would have trouble starting, but it starts fine, cranks over quite quickly... ??? |

what are you using to drive ignition? Wolf?
The ECU doesn't care what voltage it runs, as long as its more than 9V... But on the other hand, TFI, and the Coil need quite a bit of power, and regularly.. And then there's injectors, fuel pump relay/supply voltage.. a car running on just a battery won't run for long and won't run well unless you have a top notch battery. The alternator creates 110Amperes in your EFs case... on top of that the battery normally acts as a capacitor in a filtering sense, so I can see a car having trouble running on just battery. Cheers

Put a volt meter across the battery and check volts with key off, check volts again with key on but not running (if a large drop and steady decrease battery is either on its way out or simply not fully charged) now you said you have a clunking problem with alternator, maybe it hasnt been charing properly in the first place and has left you with a poorly charged battery.
Just a thought with the running rough with no belt is it possible the power steering pump pressure has something to do with it?? |

today i drove 2.5 kilometres without a belt... on my ef i6 manual... the lower tensioner pulley had its bearings lunched n threw the belt a few days ago... i got the belt and pulley all back together now n all good!... was a b**ch doing a 3 point turn in a small street with no power steering tho!! n the car was starting to get a lil warm by the time i parked it a crescent motorsport to borrow a socket to get the last bolt outa the tensioner...
