k, now i'm trying to release the timing chain tension on the EA. I've removed the plug and am sticking a wire with a hook on the end in an attempt to remove the tensioner filter. I'm sticking it in and nothings really grabbing it. If someone could describe the position of the filter or the best method to get it out would be of great help thanks.

Smiley man your having an aweful lot of trouble...

Maybe you should buy a case of beer and invite someone who's done this before to help - that way you can learn from someone who's been there, done that.

ummmmm... mine usually came out with the plug, it kinda stuck there wiht the oil, might want to check that yours didn't and you just didn't notice. it's pretty much just a cylinder thing little mesh filter.
shouldn't be hard to get at all. maybe yours wasn't fitted last time or something if it's not there?

yeh, maybe it did, a little orange rubber ring came out with it but it was covered in oil and ripped to s**t, i'd say that was it.

if you are taking the tensioner out dont undo the middle bolt. just get a small punch and hammer and remove the entire thing.

then pull it all aparts on a bench and clean it
