anything you can take off and live without on your car for a day or 2 and put it back on properly all the better.
anything you paint on the car, dont be stingy with the wasking tape/newspaper. you dont want overspray.
preperation is very important, getting the surface straight, sanding right back if you have to then priming and cleaning all the dust etc off.
use more light coats rather than less heavy coats.

I wouldnt use gloss as it shows to many imperfections, satin would be alot better finish.

I agree satin is the way to go with the older areas like the bits your painting, it'd be pitted to all hell.

Satin is half way between a gloss and a matt finish.

I sprayed the scuttle (that plasticy thing below the front windscreen) in top coat clear after plastic primer. Came up a treat!
