If you're driving along and you lose drive to the transmission - i.e. engine revs up and you go nowhere... chances are there aint enough fluid to for the torque converter to work.

I'm not sure about a just-too-low level tho - the above would be a drastically low fluid level...

very hesitant to "go" from stop... (feels like your starting from Second gear) And hard shift after that.

fluid is a tad low means when cold the shifts are very hard.
sometimes you stop hit accelerate revs climb, car no go, and then it pops into gear and you jerk off the line.

I had it 'fall out' of gear on left turns.

It also means that some of the clutches will wear out.

ie. my 4th gear after a routine 200km drive, having just checked the fluid
2 weeks ago...sob sob.

The old cold hesitation as mentioned above is a giveaway of low fluid level/poor fluid quality. Mine needed a flush and top-up - now is much better, although still hesitates a little when cold.

Also chucked some Nulon G70 in there....makes a bit of a difference.

Isn't the Nulon G70 for Manual Gearboxes?
And I thought since the BTR box needs its own fluid, any add-ins would be a no-no... *shrugs*

yes g70 is only for manual gearboxes and diffs.

steady, maybe that, but this is the symptom i had when i was about 5-600ml low in the el, very hard shifts when cold and normal when upto temp.

Turns out the Trann is fine. Its the engine. Not making enough torque, and confusing the Transmission, leading to the hard shifting.
