find a good ex-taxi, cheap, late model, and the guys and girls on here can give you plenty ideas on here. ex-cab ef-el falcons go for about $1500 on average if you look around

jazza it all depends on how much you're willing to pay for the car, and whether or not you want to modify it.
i'd be looking a bit later model if you have the funds, more like eb2 onwards if possible.
if not, just get an xf, that was my first ford.

first car hey :) , if you want an X series car then Any from the XD-XF will be a good choice for you, but to give some help in chossing i'll give some of my idears on each one

XD
solid car, easiest to fit a V8 into eventually since i doubt you have your Blacks yet (damn these 'P' plate restrictions) and a 9inch diff will bolt strait up (i think)

XE
a Very Comftable car to drive in 6cyl mode, still easy to fit a V8 but a 9inch diff takes some effort and its eaiser to fix if somthing goes wrong.

XF
i dont think its as comftable to drive as the XE (just my opinion) but the fuel injected 4.1 6cyl is a screamer with a manuel!, it will embarres more then a few commos.

i hoped that helped you some :)

My 2 c worth? look in your local paper or trader - you'll find dozens of xd - xf's for 5-600 bucks - buy yourself something cheap, maybe cos the paints really daggy or it has a rust hole or two, but runs good and has rego - take dad or a mate to run it round the block and knock them down a few bucks, then drive the crap out of it....this probably won't be your lifetime pride and joy car, but most people manage to put a few dents etc in their first car, or practice sliding it about on dirt roads etc.

Have some fun, learn how to drive, learn how to fix the niggly bits and pieces that will go wrong, and bear this rule in mind - whatever you paid for it, 1/2 of that is your maximum repair budget - so if you pay 500 for it and something breaks thats going to cost more than 250 to fix, wreck it or flog it off and get another cheapie - after a few of these cheapies, you'll be amazed how much you've learnt and how much practice you've built up in bodywork, paint etc before you get the `good ' one....
