The top wire is your PIP (assuming your talkinga bout the wire above the SPOUT on the TFI). Its your Profile Ignition Pickup... it picks up a voltage when your distributor goes past a cylinder so to speak.

PIP is an input needed to the ECU.. no PIP, no start.
SPOUT is an output, not needed by the ECU for just idling. (but for driving its needed). The SPOUT is the signal which advances your timing.

Cheers

well, that would explain it still running... just strange.. I thought all TFIs were the same... Interesting thought.
Oh well, I guess that is the SPOUT...considering it still started if you disconnected it.

Cheers

have you checked for spark? Its probably a good thing that whatever died, died.

Do all the usuals, spark fuel, air, timing, etc...

Cheers

Have you replaced your fuel pump relay? Apart from that all i can say is tfi module, even though i know you've replaced it. These things are the biggest pieces of s**t. I used to own an xf efi and the tfi module used to play up. I spent so much money on the fuel and electrics system just trying to fix the problem. Eventually i just go p***d off with it, gave it to my mechanic and told him i don't want it back until the problem had been fixed. 3 weeks later and a new tfi module it was running ok (well as good as these engines run) again.

All i can say is once you get it running right again sell the car, they are the biggest piece of s**t motor ever, everyone i know who's had them has had nothing but problems with them. They're not worth the money, i must have spent about 3 times the amount on the engine then the the f**king car was worth just to keep the piece of s**t running. I realise i'm probably going to get flamed for this, but seriously dude, do yourself a favour and get a better car if money permits.
