Hey i am going to attempt to put a new thermostat in my 3.9Ltr MPFI
which i have not done before but i guess it cant be that hard can it? Anyhing i should know, or tips from anyone who has done there? CHeers. Wez

It is so easy it isn't funny. Now, facing the car engine: undo the bottom left radiator hose. (Can be a bit of a b**ch to get off but be rough). Undo the two hoses going into the thermostat housing. Undo the two bolts ontop of the thermostat housing cover, remove the cover. pull out the thermostat and replace.

thats how i drain out the water. I like that 1 cause its low and away from everything else so causes minimum mess. But i'm sure it really doesnt matter.

15 bucks worth of coolant, its not a huge problem. Yeah drain the radiator or you'll be wearing it when you pull everything else out to get to the thermo...

i've changed 2 thermostat's on the EF we used to have - never drained it. as long as it's cold, there's no pressure buildup.

Can't u put a new one in without draining it? If you want to change it without draining do this; Using a length of plastic tubing, syphon the coolant out of the header tank. This will lower the coolant level to below the thermostat. Then undo the 2 bolts holding the upper thermostat housing in place. Remove old thermostat. Replace with new thermostat and new rubber seal. It is a good idea to smear a little selastic on the seal to help prevent leaks. bolt down the upper thermostat housing. refill header tank with captured coolant. Run engine with radaitor cap off until at operating temp and coolant in header tank is hot.

Yeah I've changed with without draining the coolant too! Usually I do drain it but just couse it's nice to put some new stuff in! |

Simply using vaseline on the rubber seal is enough.
