hi guys great forum you got here.
i have an aU xr8 that is blowing out black smoke. spark plugs and leads are fine as i just took it for a service and had them changed. my exhaust has turned from chrome to black and the black smoke gets worse when i put my foot down. hope its not too expensive to fix.... thanks |

Black smoke usually means its running rich - a lot better than burning blue smoke, and not quite as fun as white smoke.

First thing I'd try is to clean the MAF.

I agree. A prime suspect is the MAF.

Does sound like its running way rich... i thought maybe ECU was in limited operation strategy but this results in black smoke even at cruising speeds...
Yeah clean sensor wires in MAF.... maybe get it onto a dyno to see how rich it really is running....

To clean the MAF take it off the airbox and carefully remove the electronics. You'll need a security Torx bit to remove the electronics. You can buy them at tool places.
Clean the two wires with carby cleaner, be gentle so they aren't damaged. I just sprayed carby cleaner on mine til it was clean, I didn't rub them or anything. Let everything dry, reassemble the MAF and refit it.
