Can anyone tell me if there is a shift kit for the EA 3 speed Auto? It is an 88 Fairmont Ghia MPI do they run Auto from ECU or are they a separately controled box?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the old 3 speeder was hydraulic.

If it were me mate, I'd put every penny away for a 5 speed conversion.

either convert it to a 4spd auto then do shift kit n stall converter or swap a 5spd in... the 3 spd aint much good...

The 3 speed is stronger then the 4 speed. In the early to mid 90's quite a few taxi operators swapped the 4 speed back to the 3 speed. I know of a few 3 speed EL falcons getting around. The box is cheap as chips but its getting old now and not many people work on them as much as they used to. Off the shelf you can get a stage 2 shift kit for it but if you know the right people you could possible source a stage 3 (full manual shifting) shift kit.

Ive been looking for good parts for the BW51's. So far Ive found 'taxi packs' which toughen the box up a fair bit (enough for 13's 1/4 mile passes it seems) but I cant find a manual valve body for them.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking too. Why would you want to spend money on a 3 speed auto to enhance it's performance?

To me, a 3 speed auto behind an EA Fairmont is stricty for crusing purposes only.

If it's performance you're after, the T5 is your friend.

There is an argument for a tough 3 speed for performance use.

T5's are not exactly a strong box and will break if you put one beind a hi-power 6 and drag race it regularly. You could look at fitting a tough 4 speed but they are quite expensive (when rebuilt for performance), heavy, and require electronic control (which can cause its own problems). You could fit a C4 with a custom bellhousing, or go to any wrecker and get a 3 speed EA bellhousing and put a BW51 in there.

One of the guys on www.xfalcon.com.au apparently had a manual valve body for his but his was a BW 35. Same as the EA box but with some parts not as strong. IMO a stage 2 shift kit is the best comprimise for a street strip car that see's more on the street than the strip. If you want you can shift it manually and it will chirp the tyres at will or if you want to relax and let the box do its own thing you can leave it in D without any fear of it burning itself out.
