Hi all,

I'm currently building from scratch a hands free car kit that will enable the phone audio (and mp3's etc!) to play over the stereo speakers. I've built most of the unit, and I want to add a single button to the steering wheel to enable me to answer calls etc.

My question relates to the clock spring and steering wheel. I have a GLI EF, with airbag of course, but no cruise control. I want to know how many "tracks" exist on the wheel's clock spring that can be used to transmit voltage down the column. The airbag must use two on its own, and according to my Max Ellory's, the cruise (if installed) uses 3 of them. Does that mean my GLI has all 5, or just 3 for airbag and horn?

Haven't pulled off the wheel to have a look, thought i'd ask if anyone knew first. If there are a few spare, i'd like to use them for a backlighted button for night use as well.

Cheers!

Yeah, it has all 5 - 2 for Airbag (leave them be of course), 2 for the horn switches and 1 spare. So you should be able to figure out something. Backlighting may not be possible though  .

Excellent! Thanks for that!

Just need to design a resistance controller now, like the cruise control, so I can have several buttons ;-)

No probs.
The Cruise circuit design is quite ingenious on the EF/EL steering wheels, particularly using only 3 tracks.
Might be worth checking out an AU clock spring and see if it has more contacts, it might be compatible but I couldn't tell you for sure.

Pretty sure i've sussed out the backlighting issue, but i'm too greedy, and I want more buttons! :) Looking into it now - web is mighty slow tonight, but that all changes with ADSL next Tuesday!

Woohoo!

Good news - 10 channels via 2 wires

http://store.qkits.com/moreinfo.cfm/K8023

This *should* be compatible with the clockspring setup, as long as its happy to share a negative with the car on the transmitter end of the board.

Trying to find a schematic so I can check.

Bad news: the price.

But think of the posibilities with this kit - full stereo control, mobile control, cruise control, gear select.... endless uses.

Still looking into it ;-) Any suggestions????
