Hey mate. Assuming you havent changed anything i'd point the blame at a poor batch of fuel. Mine used to do this quite often on regular unleaded before i switched to 98RON (this when engine was standard).
I have heard MANY v8 owners complain of this problem.

A technical explanation?
Basically one or a combination of things: Insufficient octane (octane being resistance to knock) Too much timing advance Engine running too lean So you could retard timing advance and run s**t fuel, or increase fuel delivery and run s**t fuel. Or run good fuel

I agree with Martin. You could hear my EL knock sometimes, even when it was totally stock, on regular unleaded. I don't use the stuff now, leave it for the Hyundais and Daewoos. The 5 litre E series don't run a knock sensor to back off the timing, so the safest way to eliminate knocking is to run Premium. 60 litres of premium is only $3.60 more, and you may notice better economy, which will offset the extra cost.
Darin.

Upping the octane just 'hides' the real problem your engine may have.. There are a few things you can do to see if they are the cause of your problem. Search 'pinging' and you'll find a variety of minor things you can do that could solve your problem.

If you want to use crap standard unleaded, you'll have to turn your dizzy anti-clock wise (or is it the other way, cant remember without my head under the bonnet ) a little at a time till it stops pinging. But you will loose power.

Indeed, I wasn't saying that you should use regular unleaded - Ford says it's fine to do so. However, higher octane ratings do tend to hide such problems, in other cases you need a higher octane to run properly. All I was saying is that if you have a near to stock engine, it should be running fine on regular. If not, then there's something wrong.

Retard your timing or loose the engine detonation kills engines...
Check you fuel filter, clean your maf ??? But don't let it ping...It breaks ring lands and shokes the crap out of bearings etc...Check your spark plug heat range??? also...

dont overlook the coolant temp sensor.the computer increases the fuel/air mixture when the engine is cold and leans it out as the engine warms up.this is basically choke for an injected engine.if the sensor is dodgy then the computer may lean out a warm engine causing it to ping badly.check this out if the pinging is heaps better on a cold engine and gets worse as it warms up.The same will happen with patially blocked injectors...the engine gets more fuel when cold so it isnt as noticeable.as the computer leans out the fuel as temp rises the blocked injectors cant supply enough fuel which will cause pinging.try using a good quality fuel system conditioner and check your plugs too!upping the octane is just hiding the problem
