Dont bag me out just yet, What are the advantages and disadvantages of internally or externally wastegated turbo systems? Considering the new stage 5 kit from Snort Performance, but dont know if it would be better to have the system modified to accept external gates.

Buddies that are right into the jap turbo scene say that external gates are ALOT noisier but flow exhaust gasses more efficiently.

What are your thoughts? Just keep in mind this may be useful information for other less knowlegable members too.

Internals are fine on factory turbo cars running the stock boost setting, but if your looking for a turbo set up that will run higher boost, say, over 1 bar, then external gates are the go.

Also, externals are not louder, its just that they can be set up to vent straight to atmosphere, which of course, is loud as hell. Plumb them into the down pipe and all is nice and quiet.

Another thing to think about is we have 4lt motors, that means a huge amount of exhaust gas has to pass through the wastegate to regulate the boost presure, and on a small internal gate, it just wont pass all the gasses thus giving uncontrolled boost... a bigger wastegate will flow this gass fine, but a big flowing gates are only commonly found in the form of external gates.

Unfortunatly, external gates add around $1000 to the cost of your turbo set up... but thats life with a turbo 4lt

Thanks for clearing that up, very helpful. The plan to go ahead with the turbo setup has spectacularly fallen in a big steaming heap. Went to the bank to apply for the loan (20K on top of a 27K loan i already have) and they politely told me to piss off.
