things to check on the EA:

leaks around the head and head gasket also check welsh plugs if you can, for an auto get under and check around the rear main seal for leaks, and take it for a drive (for a minimum 10 mins) even an engine that has been cleaned will start to leak (slightly) arfter that period of time and will show.
if they wont let you test drive it walk away, more then likly their trying to hide wrong somthing with the car, but IMHO try to talk him out of that one and buy a copy of the trading post - EA's galore for alot less then $2600, the EA2 S-pac with either the 5 spd man or the 4 spd auto are a good find.

As stated all here EA's are a hard working car, check head/gasket, check for rust in chasis and all joins especially in the boot, doors and sunroof (if fitted). if he really wants an EA auto get the 4spd 4L. There are still some very nice EA's getting around just got to be patient and find them. I paid a fair price for mine however in mint condition with mods and low K's of an elderly couple.

Oh and falcon4LOHC i would get some facts right before you critise a specific car, especially when the build process for the EA is basically the same for all E series, not to mention the same 4L MPFI I6 and T5 manual geabox used in all of them, and as for wiring, well wire is wire and the same in all cars. And the EB II wasn't the first to have a 4L motor, ive also blown a mate away with my 3.9L CPI... so why are all EA falcons now rubbish????

Huh?

EBII was sooooooooo the first Falc with the 4.0 litre motor dude.

If this guy wants to spend $2,500 on a car. As said by nearly everyone here EBII manual. Steer clear of the auto if he's a "traffic light" warrior.

i agree with ya Kenwood Maverick

ea's aint rubbish if ya look after them properly.

eb to au series 2 blow head gaskets as common as ea's when they get over 180000km's but thats common 4 all pre au I6 falcons though

and wiring as u sed is all the same>

what car did ya ea 3.9 cpi blow a way? is it a 3 speed?

cause i have a 3.9 mpi 5 spd and it beats 5.0l vs commies with same mods!!!
but my 3spd cpi wont even beat a vl on vk 6!!

EA'S aint RUBBISH

No mate, you're right EA's aren't rubbish. It's just that for a few more dollars, you can have a MUCH better car in the EBII....

Same thing will be said about AU and BA in ten years time.

That's always the way tho, for a bit more money you can get the next model...

Like I'm keeping my eyes open for an AU everyone is saying nah dude you should get a BA

FFS I have a budget and that's all there is to it.

Buy privately he'll probably find an ED for 2600 no worries.

I thought the EA's only came out with the 3.9 motor, also fitted to some early EB's until the 4.0 came along. But don't buy an EA.. at the very least for that money get an EB/ED and get a few goodies at the same time, the equipment levels on an EA were much less then the later models.

equipment levels so much better aye,,the only thing my ea don't have is abs and the smartlock.

it has

cruise control
climate control
3.9,,4 speed auto,,but soon to be 4litre
central locking
electric windows
trip computer
digital dash
rear spoiler
mag wheels
split fold rear seats

so despite the above mentioned bits that it doesn't have what is the extra equipment you talk about..

You've pretty much summed it up right there

Especially the item listed between "climate control" and "central locking"

yeah right,,an engine makes every other falcon better aye,,well how many have had no trouble at all with head gaskets,,loosing water etc,,you have never had a problem i guess,,,and the only reason i am putting the 4 litre in is because it was a good deal,,and i can,,other wise i'd be staying with the 3.9 which ha done bloody good,,still original except for the hg which as you'd know is common with all e series not jut the ea,,,and abs and smartlock don't make a better car.
