with the checking i cant see why the petrol staions cant have a small device in the pumps to fudge th readings with a customer and when the ppl that do the checks they tunr the devie off so it reads correct
even if it only works out say an average of 1-2c per 30litres.... thats a HUUUGE amount off $

hardly any servo's actually own thier pumps, besides which, the amount of paperwork you have to go through to WORK on a pump is considerable, and any parts used in them have to be certified to be used in a hazardous environment

shell, caltex and woolworths (not sure about others) servo pumps are owned by gilbarco veeder-root, and as such, the only things the servo is allowed to do to them is turn the power on/off, clean them and apply signage as appropriate, anything more and they get in deep s**t, the only people allowed to work on the pumps are either gilbarco technicians or a contracted service rep

yeh they had soem big investigation and reckoned that people were being robbed 3 dollars every time they filled up. Consider the amount of people sucked in . . . . nice little side profit.

They do audit this kind of thing because i think you need a licence to sell fuel, yes?

Altho i think the last time shell was caught with out-of-spec pumps, the fines totalled a few thousand dollars. Pimple on the a** of a company making that much money.
was that all shell sites in australia? a drop in the bucket - next time you pay :D :D :D :D you just got ripped

I remember seeing on the news that they deliver hot fuel to the service stations, (ie 50-70C) and since its hot it expands. people who buy hot fuel find that when it cools down you actually have 2-3 litres less.

As mentioned above, sell fuel by weight (mass) like in Europe, is the way to go.
