I've an EL XR8 manual.
It started making a kind of vibrating noise which can easily be felt/heard within the higher rev range (ie. 3500rpm and up) a few weeks ago. The vibration has started gettin worse & is most noticable at high speeds, ie. on freeways, especially when releasing the accelerator while still in gear. Also, i have noticed that it has started to make a 'clunk' noise from the back of the car (like there is some play in the driveline somewhere) when takin off from a standstill (in both forward & reverse). Now i dont know if this problem relates to the vibration issue that i mentioned in the first paragraph, but though id mention it just incase. Any help would be much appreciated, Cheers. |

For a start mate i'd be checking the universal joints, it could also be coming from the diff but it sounds like a uni to me.
I will add that may have 2 sep issues although i doubt it. When you say 3500 rpm upwards, is that when you are driving? What if you sit in neutral and rev to 3500? In that case the vib would more than like be Harmonic balancer, water pump etc. |

Nah it only happens when driving, not in neutral - you can feel it through the gear shifter. |

Definately driveline then, my AU has got a similar vib but without the clunk... mine is worse when the car is cold, seems bad when you take off in the morn and after a cpl of k's it settles down.

What about your tail shaft? it tends to make a hell of a VIBRATION if its damaged in any way!

I had a similar problem & it turned out to be the rubber on the ballancer had slipped around half a turn, and the counterweight was hard against the main pulley, it took me ages to find it costing me a tailshaft, unis, engine mounts etc .
if it is the ballancer don't replace it with a stocko if you are gonna rev it, as I have now spun 2 stocko's and the aftermarket are'nt that much more expensive. cheers kenny

UJ's on the driveshaft may be worn (more likely the rear one) Hows the condition of the bushes on the upper control arms off the diff? (not sure of the correct name sorry) If these are worn it can change the pinion angle causing driveline vibrations also can cause a clunk when engaging drive.

I had the same symptoms in my Fairmont Ghia... virbrations up the top end of the rev range, and clunks in the rear end... Thats what it first started as... mine started slipping gears, and grinding... i had to drive 50kms at 60kmh because the gears would slip soo bad above that speed.
It ended up being the gearbox, which required a total rebuild costing me over $2000... u might just want to get it checked out, just in case... They told me that mine was preventable but in the end just got too bad and had to rebuild it.
