This has most likely been covered before, but I dislike the search function. Is there anyway of fixing a climate control's buttons from being so damn unresponsive? Mine are really bad, I was trying to initiate the climate control diagnosis and all that but it was bloody impossible because making any button work on that thing requires multiple presses or hardddd presses or luck, lol.
So am I able to take the system out, and clean or something behind those buttons? I know they are not meant to be this bad with regards to responsiveness, dad's ol Fairmont (with more ks worked better).

yeah easy as to take it out. just take off the dash facia, then unscrew the 4 screws holding the climate control unit in.
the unclip the grey face and buttons from the white base. i found it easier to start unclipping it from the bottom as the little things that hold it in place can be a b**ch. then just unscrew the circuit board which will reveal the buttons! if it doesnt work cleaning it, i got a unit forsale which was working fine b4 i took it out

oh and when u put it back together, make sure all the electrical pins line up properly, otherwise the buttons wont know wot they're doing when u put it back in. found that out the hard way

also when you disassemble the c/c unit, make sure the facia pin's solder joints haven't been 'squashed' together, this gets worse the harder you push the unit's buttons,
If you look at the way its assembled, you can see where exactly I mean (theres plastic that rubs on the solder connections) After you have cleaned this up... remove the push buttons itself, I wash these in soapy water and then rinse them off with a towel... once dry.. get some 'medi-swabs' (isopropyl alcohol) and clean the contacts up as well as the screen (you'll be surprised of how much s**t there is) PS. Everyone should have these wipes.. they're perfect for nearly everything from cleaning cd's, monitors and even heads on the VCR! you get them from the chemist for around 6 bux a box per 100 cheers

with taking the face of the unit off, i found it was easy to use wire a screw driver to pry it apart, i just grabbed 4 peices of wire an bent it into a U shape. then pry the top open slightly an stick one in, then move to the sides an repeated till all but the bottem had these wires in. then it just popped out.

Hmmm, is taking that dash facia off easy or hard or a hassle? I don't want a heap of other s**t to fall off when I remove it.

very very easy mate. take u no more than a few minutes. remove the ash tray and its surround. 3 screws near ur intrument cluster. 1 near the door lock button and another near the fuel/boot release. then u just need to unplug the buttons. whole thing should lift off.
u got a gregorys manual? should all be in there

i personaly found the facia of the cc unit hard but when i clicked with the wire it was a matter of seconds. 8 tabs hold the face of the unit on, thats the reason behind the wire lol

yeah it was a bit of a b**ch. but i found if u do the 2 tabs at the bottom first then work ur way around the sides it tends to come off a bit easier

i just jammed small flat heads on all sides and then it just popped out and one of the screw drives flung at my face......but it got out nonetheless =D

yeah i used a screwdriver to push the tabs in. shouldnt take very long to dismantle it tho. just make sure u have a set of jewellers screwdrivers (the little ones) on u to unscrew the circuit board from the grey housing

If the carbon on the buttons themselves have worn away after cleaning super gluing small peices of aluminium foil to them will fix the problem.
