this is very weird but on friday night after work. i was taking a few mates home. we went for a drive and i gave it a bit of juice and it went back into first then straight into second gear. i drove it for about 20 seconds, but the weirdest thing is that everytime i had to stop at traffic lights, it would start off in 2nd gear.

wat could be the cause of this problem, is it the trans or the ecu????

Not going into limp home mode or something is it? I think it may have been an inhibitor switch or something in a friends transmission (ea 3 speed?) that decided to stop working. It was forever changing gears and not doing what it should. I think it was taking off in first as per normal, clicked into second, then straight into third. Revs were too low, so back into second, and back to third again

Strange :S

possibly tranny solenoid, my fairmont did this to me a few months ago...
S2 solenoid, managed to get it fixed with a gearbox service for $250 which was a great price.

Ford wanted about $550 to fix it
various other mechanics quoted me $400-500.
You can get it done for around the $250-300 mark dont get ripped off by dodgy mechanics :)

EDIT: S2 Solenoid

My father EL Fairmont has this problem. I helped him put some of that top of the line (apparently) trans fluid in it and it was going nice for a while. Now it is completely stuck in 3rd and won't move from there.

Yep, definantly Limp mode. It would've been in 3rd gear, not 2nd.

If it happens again any time soon, go and get the auto checked out.

My EA 4spd was in limp mode, (My mates new it as C*** mode) for a while coz the trans didnt like an electronic shift kit I fitted.

I got a quote from a few mechanics and they said it would be cheaper to replace than repair and no guarantee of repair!!!

It spent a couple days at 2 different mechs and they had no idea!

yours may not be the prob but be prepared for the possibility of a new trans.
