It should be TDC!
Generally 1 mark = TDC, 2 marks = TDC and timing mark.

TDC.

The degree markings on the timing case determine firing position.

For an EF, the base timing is set at TDC. For pre-ef, its set at 10deg.

i got the timing light onto my ef while it was just idling, and the timing case pointer is around 20mm away from the slot.

does anyone know how to set timing and what exactly do i have to do?

Timing is not adjustable on an EF. If it was out, the car would barely run. So if its working OK, then the timing is OK.

To check the timing properly, the ECU must be in diagnostics mode. Plenty of information and docos on how to do that, so have a look.

i can't for the life of me remember the bloody name of that thing, but i pulled the dizzy thing out when i had to replace the welsch plugs, and i think i may have put it in a tooth out.
would it run at all if it was a tooth out, i've never had the chance to tell before.
the reason i think this is that i keep getting engine knock when i boot it after start up. it goes away within 2-3 seconds if you don't back off (knock sensor/ecu doing it's thing).
once i turn the car off, it's like it resets, and will repeat the whole process over again.

it probably has lol, but it appears to be in pretty good shape, i had a quick look over it as i was doing the head.
i was going to pull it off to replace what i thought was a leak from the front main, but it was the old head all along.
im glad i didnt waste my time.
