I have a problem with my falcon

As mentioned, it is the greatest f**k in the history of ford, the 1988 EA with the looks-like-a-carby-but-actually-is-efi engine.

When i'm driving it, say on the highway at 100kmh, the engine just stops, without warning, and i'm left to muscle it over to the side of the road without power steering or brakes, sometimes it starts right up again, sometimes it does not, and yes it is always full of fuel, i have replaced the fuel pump, throttle body and injectors but to no avail.

My Dad used to own an EA and he reckons ford fixed it and it was some relay worth $15.

I was wondering if there is some common sensor/fuse/relay problem with these engines that can be easily fixed or should i take it back to the ford dealer and let the experts handle it???

yeah, relays can definately be intermittent like that... have a look at two bulky relays under the coolant bottle.

Ones green, the other black from memory. Green is fuel, black is ECU and ignition... You can just replace them with normal relays and some spade connectors.. or pay $60 or whatever they are from ford and put the originals in.

Cheers

Mate, it's the TFI module on the dizzy and it's breaking down under heat. The exact same thing you are describing happened to my old EB falcon.

After a couple of weeks, it cut out and refused to fire for a good 3 hours. I got RACQ out and he wacked in a 2nd hand dizzy, that he had in his shop for $100. Never had another problem.

Get it replaced sooner rather than later because it could leave you high and dry.

Similar thing happened to me lol... swapped the dizzy, coil, everything, found it to be the relays.

But it could be anything really. Easy enough to check.

If your driving along, and it stops, make sure you have a multimeter handy... Check terminal 5 on the ECU, or the positive side of the coil, it should have battery voltage ~12V. If it does, your relay is fine... If not, relay needs replacing (ECU one).

Also, as a side note, ECU relay controls the TFI module too, and the fuel pump relay..

Cheers

I had to replace the modulator thingy, its a grey plastic thing that sits behind your Air-con, about the size of your palm.

This same problem used to happen to my EB CPI
