Sorry I should have explained a little more.
I would like to know where the gauge should sit say after a 50km drive doing the speed limit should it be in the middle of normal or below the m I know it should not be more than that???? |

Somewhere below halfway is pretty normal...should usually be about 1/4 up

Mine sits between the 'A' & 'M' all year round.

its not so much how long your driving, more the type of driving. if your cruising along at 60+ then the engine should be getting effective cooling. whereas if your stuck in traffic temps should rise.
mine normally sits between the A and the L. if im in traffic it can rise up to just above the R i had a new radiator put it my old car, and also had the whole system blasted. after that it never rose above the L

My EL falcon sits just below the L on NORMAL, and never gets any higher. I recently installed an 82 degree thermostat which is 10 degrees cooler than the standard item.
With the 92 degree thermostat it use to sit between R/M city driving and between M/A on the highway. BPT sell them as well as most good auto shops. |

im running a 77 Deg thermostat.. sits on the L crusing on the freeway, city driving A-L or hot days in peak hour maybe M-A
average temp @ L is about 83 degrees or so. fuel consumption hasnt changed, mines always been s**t. then again with the origional thermostat the car was running at 100 degrees no matter what basically. im quite happy where it is now

Gaz is right, it's hard to say where it should be sitting on the gauge, those things are about as accurate as I am a gorilla.
You've gotta get a temp measurement that's a fixed number

A experienced mechanic advised me to put it in the car, it helps prevent head gasket failures. The reason why ford used a 92degree thermostat was only to get the engine hot enough to burn nitrogen dioxide gases in the combustion chamber to meet emission levels. |

That may be the case, however mine, with a 92° thermostat sits at the top of the A all year round. The only time it will get hotter is on a 40° day towing a heavy trailer up a hill. You can hardly call that hot. Its all about the condition of the cooling system and putting a colder themostat in maybe only a bandaid to a much larger problem.
By the way my heater works brillantly too.
