Hi Guys,
The temp guage on my EL always sat around the 'M' in 'Normal', until a few nights ago it started falling BELOW that (down to the A or the L), and back up again. When the car is at rest, it sits on the 'M' still. When I drive on flat ground it will fluctuate every 30 seconds or so. The oil looks good, water is clean and not leaking. I changed the thermostat, seal, and gasket. Any ideas anyone?

It only started suddenly though.
would seem like a sudden change in the way it runs for no reason.

hi
your thermostat could be on its way out. mine was doing that not long ago then one day it started running a little warmer than usual then it would run cool for a while untill the point where the thermostat just stuck shut ind the car would run hot. i changed the thermostat and its perfect now... |

What? The new one that I said I put in there?
It's also making a slight noise I think it might be the water pump or something like that... will have to have it looked at.

Did you bleed the air out of the system correctly after you changed the thermostat?
If not, that would be the cause. It will generally go away after a few hours driving once all the air is purged. If you did, the something else is up. The newer style thermostats have a small hole drilled in them to apparently aid in temperature stabilisation. When I had one of these in my car, the gauge would fluctuate up and down a bit until the temperature 100% stalilised. |

a little abit of movement in the gauge is normal, the movement should be smooth and consistent not jerky or on/off.
the genuine thermostat starts opening at 89-93c and are fully open by 103-106c. and always use a genuine thermostat as they stay open in case of failure so you don't fry the motor.

My car is still garaged until I can afford to fix it. I'm not prepared to send it to a mechanic until I've got a few hundred $$ up my sleve. The movement of the thermostat is not 'jerky' so to speak, but goes up and down between two predictable points (where it used to sit all the time, and another position lower than that). It swings between those two positions.

the temp guage in my ea goes up and down all the time,,never had a problem and rarely looses water,,so as long as it goes down and not up i wouldn't worry to much

So you wouldn't worry if this never happened for years, and then started
happening all a sudden?

bleed your system my mate changed his thermostat and put new coolent in and forgot to bleded the air out so there are air pockets in so when the water/coolent comes around there will be air pockets causing the heat to rise and then fall
