hi guys
i have a ef fairmont, and my brake lights dont work, it keeps blowing the 15 amp fuse, when ever i press down on the brake which makes it seem like a short in curcuit some where any one got any ideas? do you think it's a wireing issue ? or the switch on the bake pedel? or a short in one of the globes?

pull ur rear lights out and check if there are no shorts on the circuit board (not really circuit board just a bunch of metal running around) and if it all seems fine check the wiring at the brake pedal. if thats not it i think u have to check the whole electrical part of the system........there might be a short where the fuse is too just behind where like millions of wires hang loose

My guess is a broken brake switch.

Have you taken the dash out recently? There is a couple of plugs under the steering column that are the same - I had a problem when I put in a manual pedal box where I accidentally plugged in the wrong loom. I had the exact same problem where the 15a fuse kept blowing.

replace the brake light switch to start with, local auto store about 10 bucks, prick of a job but. there's more details in the technical documents on this site. the part number for the Nice brand one is S60.

check that your towbar wiring isnt shorted?

If all else fails, try unpluging the cruise control unit.
and don't forget to check the middle brake light, this may have melted and shorted its contacts

Well you need to isolate which area the problem is in:
1. Pull the brake s/w plug. 2. Turn ignition on. 3. With a multimeter check between each brake s/w plug pin and earth and find which one gives you 12v, this is the power side and should be fine. 4. Turn ignition off. 5. With the multimeter check the resistance of the other brake s/w plug pin to earth, should have around 18 ohms or more - what you're looking for here is a dead short. 6. If you have a short in step 5, check each stoplight bulb (the 2 tailight ones should be dual filament) and the highmount one also, and as mentioned as well, check the trailer plug for shorts. Report your findings for further advice if needed.

I had the same problem, as xpression has already said, make sure that your trailer plug isn't shorted
Someone kicked off the trailer plug from my EL and the exposed wires were just skipping along the road until the inevitable short. Funniest thing was when the indicators came on the parkers / dash lighting flashed with it |

Sometimes the contacts within the trailer socket can slide out, and come in contact with the cap on the end. If its plastic, no big deal, but if its metal, it will short out! Id be replacing the brake light switch first. If it hasnt disintegrated yet, its probably not far off it!

a faulty brake light switch won't cause a short to ground tho, because it has no connection to ground, it will cause either a closed circuit or an open circuit all the time

There are a few aftermarket brands out there that are all metal switches, rare to short out but there is a possibility!
Try unpluging the switch itself, and shorting the 2 pins out to see if you have made yourself a useless fuse or better yet..... a red garage door.

sounds to be it. under thedash on the brake pedel you will see 2 wires going to a switch, unplug and remove the swith. bridge the connections with a split pin (or a bit of wire) and see if the brake lights come on with out blowing a fuse.
