I have been reading a number of posts lately that refer to 347cid Windsors as 5.6L - if I convert cid to litres I get 5.686 which rounded is 5.7L. I think the T-series strokers were 342cid so 5.6L (5.604L) is right for them... has this just been adopted by/for the 347's I wonder.

For that matter, are the 5.0L Windsors still 302cid... if so why are they not still 4.9L (4.948L)?

1000 divided by (2.54x2.54x2.54) will give you the number of cubic inches in a litre

Correct, but this doesn't explain why people refer to 347 strokers as 5.6L and 302s are badged as 5.0L.

Yeh well we know that Ford's 302ci is really 4949cc but it sounds better if you round it up.

Maybe they round 4.949 up to 4.95 and then round it up again to 5.0... sounds a bit desperate if you ask me. Does anyone know what the actual cid or ml of Holden's 5.0 is (still 307?)?

When specing out my 347 build I also wondered why Tickford advertised their strokers as 5.6L. I'm pretty sure they have the '347' crank/rod combo thought..

holden early 5.0 was a 308, then because of bathurst (trying to beat the Fords again) they reduced the engine in the VL to 304 (4.9Lt) still called it a 5.0 tho reason being they could shed some 65kg in body weight being under 5.0ltrs. hope that answer your question Free347

the 347's are actually 342's, do the maths on the specs and you will see what Im talking about.
(4/2)^2x3.14x3.4x8=341.8ci therefore a 342ci displacement compliments of scat cranks, however the ford racing crank PN M-6303B340 also shares this 3.4" stroke and notes on thier 347 kits that it requires a 0.030" overbore to achieve the advertised 347CI

Yes, your final displacement is determined by the amount of over-bore - the 5.6L/342 runs std bore and the 347 requires 0.03" over which is kinda standard when reworking a 302 anyway I think. Maybe people don't factor this in and are taking the T3's lead when they just refer to their 347 (true 347s) as 5.6L. If my info is right a true 347 works out a fraction bigger than Holden's 5.7L.

Its just like holden with thier gen 3 v8's.
Their capacity is 346ci but they call it a 5.7 for marketing reasons, thats why so many twits call them "350's".
Same as their 308 changed capacity to 304 due to group A specs because their motors were over 5 litres but they were still marketed as 5.0l and yet people still call em "308's".

Just goes to show holden drivers.....
