how the f**k do you do a diagnostics check to extract any error codes using the plugs under the bonnet on the series 1 EB models? (I am not talking about the later model ones that are under the dash)

I -think- it's shorting the pins on the lhs of the plug - but I'm waiting for someone who has a clue (which is so not me) to confirm before I do this..
