You guys talk about it like you are putting your engine in danger by disabling it - keep in mind that its only the mid and high clusters that got this feature and its not like there are gli's blowing left right and centre. For the rest of them, a temperature gauge and warning light seems to be enough. If someone is going to ignore them to the point where the engine gets damaged is a low coolant light really going to help?
Fix it if its cheap and easy, otherwise no big deal. I guess we are going to have to agree to disagree on this. You are right it isn't in the pov packs, however that doesn't mean it is a useful tool to have working in vehicles that are fitted with it. Besides relying on a temp gauge may be too late and do irrepairable damage, as this low coolant warning light has saved my a*** several times in the past. IMO regardless of what it is, if something needs fixing it should be fixed properly!

well look at it like this.
your hose blows (i've had it happen 2 times on the xr6, and once on my old ef gli). i wouldn't have had a motor left if it wasn't for my mate behind me who saw my hose blow in the gli. with my xr6 had the light come on twice so it wasn't a problem with that car. also, incase you didn't know, a gauge won't show hot when there's no water in the cooling system. it'll sit anywhere under half usually, therfore you don't even notice it's blown till your motor ceases. im not saying your wrong by removing the light, but in my experiences, i would repair that feature rather than disable it. i would have had to rebuild an engine if it weren't for the light.

yep.
one in my old car, and 2 in the xr6. i just finished the head and fitting it all back together. i took it for a run around the back streets, on comes the light so i went back, heater hose blown. i fixed that, took it for another run, and the thin long top small hose (thermostat housing to reservior) blew. and after i fixed all that, i drove it around for a bit and could smell coolant, the metal hose from water pump to heater had a leak in it. oh and somewhere between all that a welsch plug s**t itself too, but i caught that before the light could come on.

When your doing a head gasket its also a good time to deck the engine bay out with a new set of hoses and clamps.

yeh i put welsch plugs down exhaust side, new top and bottom hoses, a couple of other hoses, water pump, o ring, thermostat housing, thermostat, reservior, cap, belt, idler pulleys, starter motor, battery.
too bad i didn't do the 2 hoses that blew, but now they're all replaced.

i put it down to a faulty cap, but the previous owner filled the car with water, hence the rusty welsch plugs and heater hose.
