Hi forum,

Can someone explain to me this .....

If the transmission has a lock up converter in top (4th), and I assume this is done electronically ...

Why cant it be done in 3rd also?

Is there any benefit?

Is there more to this 'lock-up' process .... i.e. specialised type of converter? Or ...

Please explain ....

Cheers,

Hey

Yeah the lock up torque converter (or torque converter clutch... i'll refer to it as TCC) is a function of the transmission, the torque converter and the ECU.

Basically picture a bolt which can be "pushed" through the torque converter to bolt it all together and have the turbine turning at the same speed as the pump/stator.

It can be done in 3rd gear - and falcons with a TCC will do so. Not always noticable tho and really the only time this happens is if you have 3rd selected manually.

Ive seen people play around with manual override of the TCC. Basically, figure out which wire on the ECU is for the TCC and rig up a switch that sends 12v down that wire. You can then lock the TCC whenever you want, altho i was told it only worked in 3rd and 4th gear.

Hmmmm ..... Excellent explanation ....

So in an EEC-V you could access the electronic map or configuration for this lock-up action? (In theory?)

Does changing to an after-market convertor change the effect or timing of this lock-up action?

Interesting concept brewing here .........

Cheers

Torque convertor lock up in 3rd is an EF onwards feature AFAIK.
ED's don't do it, hence why you haven't noticed ;)
TC lockup is controlled by the S7 solenoid, IIRC, and people on here have put it on a switch, (snap?).
Most aftermarket 'hi stall' convertors have support for lockup now, but its always better to check.
Don't know how/if they effect the lockup effect...

Hope that info helps mate!

Yep, EF onwards will lockup in 3rd when in economy mode only. In normal mode it wont lockup unless you are in 4th. Pre-EF will only lockup in 4th.

I spoke to shift kits about this, answer i got was 'no' can't be done. as long as your running 12v down the line it should work. go buy a kit from jaycar for $10 that looks at the engine revs and hook it up. tell us how you go.

Have a read of http://www.fordmods.com/forums/viewtopi ... +converter .
I'll be going to a manual trans soon, so I haven't developed mine any further. EBGizmo was going to pursue this further, might be an idea to ask him.
