Coming from timing chain area?
what could it be? tensioner/guide broken? everything looks ok! What should i look for? Cheers

I have the exact same problem. From searching around on these forums it appears it is common with large cams and shaved heads.
I took my timing cover off last weekend because I thought one of the guides must be broken, but they were all fine and replacing the tensioner made no difference. Has anyone been able to solve this problem? |

having a shaved head will make the timeing chain looser, if it is shaved enough or the chain has stretched enough so the the tenioner is out of adjustable range the chain can slap around, i dont think theres alot you can do with it..
check the tension of the chain, thats all i can suggect.. -mitch

My chain and guides & tensioner are brand new. Not sure how much the heads been shaved but I'm running a rspec 4 cam and there was plently of piston to valve clearance.
Would it be possible to shim the tensioner so it applies more tension? The chain is slapping against the righthand guide and there is a bit of slack in the chain on this side. |

I had this problem on an EA, after much playing around I discovered that my problem was the keyway on the timing chain drive gear to crankshaft was worn allowing movement - replaced this gear and key and no more noise

definately from front of motor? Mate of mine has a ticking from his torque converter at stall speed ~1800rpm

Excellent advice guys, Thanks.
Sounds like a rubbing/slapping/grinding noise. My head has been shaved alot. it could be a slack chain, maybe a new tensioner or some shims as weeman suggested is the way to go. Don't quite understand what your talking about Loelot. Please explain? Cheers

is the chain linkless or does it have a main link?if it has a mainlink for god sake take the tappet cover off and see if the clip has come off .it happened to mine it was a close call the main link was all most out if it come out it would of bean a nightmare

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I had this problem on an EA, after much playing around I discovered that my problem was the keyway on the timing chain drive gear to crankshaft was worn allowing movement - replaced this gear and key and no more noise The drive sproket mounted on the crankshaft (behind the crankshaft pulley) that drives the timing chain was where my problem occurred, the sproket had worn the keyway and also the key, luckily in my case the crankshaft keyway was ok. hope that helps |
