if the ones you have now are stuffed (very old) then a new set of leads can help it run smoother. Replacing otherwise good leads wont do anything

if you put new leads on it also helps with your spark .if you leads are getting old it puts strain on your coil or coil pack to give it a good spark. with new leads less strain and a good strong spark and motor burns well and better fuel acomany

The standard test for checking any spark plug leads are:

1 get a multimeter that can measure resistance (ohms) the symbol kinda looks like a light bulb with the bottom cut off ;) set it to k ohms (kilo or 1000's of ohms)
2 Pull the leads one at a time!!!!!!
3 see point 2
4 connect one of the test prongs to one end of the lead and the other to the opposite. it doesn't matter which way they go.
5 if the ohmmeter doesn't read anything or flashes quickly and goes to zero or off scale then you have not set it onto kilo ohms and need to change the setting.
6 if the reading is less than 1kilo ohm per inch of lead, the lead is classed as servicable.
7 replace lead and go back to step 2

On a more personal and purely speculative note, I would not use a lead that has more than 6-8 kilo ohms of resistance regardless how long it is. Also just because leads are new does not mean that they are ok. I have bought champion leads with 3 of the 6 over 10k ohms of resistance straight from the packet. This is why I never use anything made by champion.

Also just because they pass it does not 100% guarantee that they are ok as leads can break down under load which is impossible to test without either expensive equipment or giving yourself lots of nasty electric shocks.

cheers
Scott

A common thing to watch on 4L i6 engines and v8's is you can get crossfire from the leads (earthing out and if left for long enough can burn the coil out),example is look at your leads if they are lightly or heavily coated with greyish powder, would suggest replacement, but dont replace leads if not worn would just be a waste of money.Only run bigger leads if you have a big spark system like ice or accel something like along those lines.Hope that helps.
