The ashtray in My series 1 EF broke and i cant get hold of one from a wrecker. I was looking at putting an EL surround in but i noticed they only have one screw hole wheras the EF has two. Will it still fit and how can i modify it if it doesn't?

Ok - the trick is that on the LH side of the EL radio surround is where one screw goes, which screws onto the dash surround.

However, on the RH side, there is no screw - what happens is that there is a screw with a ball bearing on the end, which clips onto the dash surround behind the cigar lighter.

Ask for this small part, and this little part will screw into the same hole (on the RH side) where your original ashtray surround used to be. I have done this conversion before on and EF series one Fairmont and looks more presentable and user friendly.

My EF1 still works a treat luckily. My dad got an EL one for his Fairmont though when he had his. Visually, I prefer the EF one myself, hides the lighter and the shape of it is better space wise (exterior).

The EF looks neater, I had the EL one cuz the TV plugged into the 12v socket and looked ugly witht he EF one in. Then I hardwired it in so it didnt show at all.

i just found a screw with a rounded head, and made sure it would click into the EL surround, then before i put the surround in, put the screw into the RHS screw hole, then just put the surround on and clicked the surround over the screw head.
