C1 and C2 are carby heads. E1 and E2 are efi heads and are apparently better.

Cant remember the code on the side but the best heads to use are the injected ones. These have a plain kidney shaped chamber. If you are lucky there is a version of this head called a redwood head. It had slightly larger valves. The ones to steer away from are the cast iron ones (obviously! ) and the eraly xds and es. These have a chamber shape sort of like a distorted pacman mouth. The piece sticking into the chamber creates a hotspot which needs to be ground off before it is put back on. The casting on the side actually denotes the type of vehicle it came off. I used to have all these codes when I worked in the trade but seem to have misplaced them.
Hope this helps.

Early alloy heads, s1 and s2 upto 85..? had the kidney shaped chambers.
About 86 they brought in the heart shaped chambers which look similar to the EA type chamber. Which helped with emissions but not that good for power. Valves are severely shrouded etc. Look for a XE or 84 - 85 XF EFI head. All alloy heads use 39mm exhaust valves, but the injected head has larger inlet valves and seat to match. Head still needs work to the ports mainly in the short turn radius, just above the valve seat and around the valve guide boss. Most of this work needs to be concentrated to the exhaust, though the efi heads have larger inlet valves and seats, the port just above the valve seat was never machined from the factory to suit the larger internal diameter of the larger seat.
