Hi.
Just wanted some feedback and maybe suggestions regarding the following specs i have currently installed in my EL. I would like to hear from anyone if i have made the right choices. Main Power from Battery: 4g to dist block split into 2 X 4g directly to each amp. 1 X 300wrms JL Audio 4ch, and 1 X 500wrms JL Audio mono. Ground Cables: 2 X 4g cables. 1 from each amp conected to child restraint anchor bolt on parcel shelf. I am not using a capacitor, and i have not upgraded the car's factory + & -wiring. My battery is a 550cca Exide. Voltage at battery reads a steady 13.8 volts. Voltage at amplifier connection points under load drops marginally to around 13.4 volts. Headlight dimming is very minimal at high volume. Any feedback would be great. Suggestions on how i may improve anything or thoughts as to weather everything seems sweet.... Your comments are greatly appreciated. |

For what you have there mate its all sweet.
Battery output with system running is outputting a good voltage with the system going...for that gear and power output..cables sides are sufficient...and I would see any need to upgrade anything. ppl way say battery or cap etc but you dont need too...the cap would help with the dimming but not necessarily.... plus unless you run ya system loud and hard continuosly the capacity and cranking amp output will be fine for this setup....if you wanted to you could go for a higher output battery....such as a 650cca Oddyssey or 880cca Optima D34 yellow top. Remeber the cca (cold crankin amp) value is only really a meaningful value for the initial startup of a system mainly the kick over of ya motor.... dw bout a secondary battery for this setup.

Hey thanks Big Kev.
One thing that still strikes me is the voltage readings i am getting directly from the battery. Is it normal for these cars to be getting a 13.8 volt reading when readings are always said to be around 14.2 volts? I actually tested a mates EF Futura and he had the same reading as me. Is this ok? Or should i look at having the alternator checked out? Another thing, is it ok that i am running a main 4g split into 2 X 4g? Some people say that i would have to split that 4g into 2 X 8g. Can you or anyone shed some light on this perhaps? |

It's certainly not wrong to split into 2 4ga cables. It just means you may be running larger cable than needed. If it's already there then there's no point changing it to smaller cable. It just means that the voltage drop to the amps will be less than if running 8 ga (a good thing), just that it's not usually enough of a difference to bother going for the larger stuff.
I think they're just saying that because most setups generally go from 4 ga to two 8 ga. I agree with Big Kev - sounds like the cable size is ok, 0.4 Volts drop from the cable should be fine. I don't see much advantage replacing it with larger cable. |
