Greetings All
I have an EA with 3.9 mpfi. Going to take the head off for a good clean and strip, check the valves, springs etc before putting a stage 1 cam in. Two questions: 1. Is the AU gasket OK for the 3.9?? 2. I've read elsewhere that you should run straight water for a day or two to help the head gasket seal before putting in coolant. Does this apply to the AU gasket as its metal ?? ( in a sandwich ?? ). Thanks guys. |

1. AU Gasket will be fine
2. Never heard of that theory before. I think everyone has put coolant straight into the engines after a head gasket swap and has worked fine for many 1000's of km. Its how I have done mine, and its been all good. Good luck with the work.

AU gasket all fine
mechanics usually put coolent straight in afterwards, dont have to run water for a few days as far as I know and ive replaced 2 heads |

also use AU headbolts as they have better robust threads than your standard EA headbolts.

one tip, BE CAREFUL NOT TO SNAP THE TIMING CHAIN GUIDE WHEN YOUR REMOVING THE HEAD, THEY ARE AS BRITTLE AS A TWIG.

When refitting the headbolts put a dollop of oil under the heads. This stops the bolts galling up on the head and giving false readings on your torque wrench. I have always run water for the first week but I'd never heard of it being used to help gasket seal. I always did it so I didn't waste coolant if there was any sort of leak

i run straight water for a week for the same reason xhute0 does,,it's not cheap.
also use a thread sealer on the head bolts,,like graphite paste.
