Thats weird. I put mine basically vertical in the cutout to the lower-rear of the door. it needs to be pointed in line with the button shaft direction, or it will act to bend the bar instead of pull on it. From memory, I also had to drill a small hole in a certain part of the door, so that I could actually tighten up the 3-screw lug to do the final adjustments.
The actuators have more than enough "throw" to move the button - are your factory motors working? Perhaps a pic of your door while the trim is off would help, and I could photoshop the actuator in for you. Heres where I put mine (just found the pics!) You can see the 3 extra holes I drilled to get access to the rod connection. 3rd time was the charm

To avoid certain other mechanical bits in the door, it was a bit of trial and error session bending it to get it right, and the rod to the aftermarket actuator is far from straight. Not a problem, since the eyelet of the new central had a rotating bit that clipped on the end which allows for a bit of misalignment if space is a pain.

You can mount the actuators on the factory brackets - fronts will need some of the strap you get with the kits to make the mounting due to the triangular shape. Position your aftermarket unit on the back of the bracket (original actuator still fitted), and position it and mark the holes for drilling - check for correct range of movement while the original actuator is still fitted. Remove original actuator, fit aftermarket, connect pushrod, bolt back to door. Probably the most time consuming part is drilling out the original mounting riviets.
