Im looking to upgrade my has mixer, as mine is a total bottleneck.
It brings the intake diameter down to around 45mm.

The mixer is a solid unit that cosists of the venturi part and the connection for the pipe. The actual gas regulation is controlled further down the hose by a stepper motor and not the mixer.
So what I wanna know is, whats all this about needing your mixer exactly matched to your converter? What would be the effects of me adding a simply larger diameter version of what I have.

Isn't the reason why the mixer is so small in the intake is to create two different pressures on either side of the mixer? Thats the way the gas is mixed, and if you increase the mixer, hence there will be a less difference between the 'two' pressures. Hence it wont mix as good?

Dont know, but thats what i always thought, any info for us would be appreciated :)

Interesting idea, but I think alot of mixers arent near as restrictive as mine, so it doesnt explain how they work.

Those solid type mixers are tuned that way for the engine, not the convertor. The restriction is needed to create the vacuum required to draw against the secondary diaphragm in the convertor and allow LPG to flow. The stepper motor restricts this further by allowing it to be varied and allowing better power and economy. Usually any of these style LPG mixer will have a slightly detrimental effect on petrol performance and economy. But I guess if you have LPG you'd be more concerned with LPG power anyway.
If the stepper motor was running almost fully closed all the time, then I wouls consider that the LPG mixer is to resrictive and could do with some relief. But normally the y are pretty much spot on unless you've had heaps of engine mods done.

Thanks for the info gippsweb. Couple of questions though.
What are the alternatives, and are they better or worse for lpg performance?

Just FYI, I recently had my dual fuel EF dynoed at APS after some light mods and the difference between LPG and petrol (with the mixer removed) was only 6 rwkw. And mine is a particularily crap system, already installed when I bought the car. So unless your mixer is even worse than mine, your real world gains are going to be minimal and in a bang-for-your-buck scenario probably not worth it.

I removed the mixer and drove around on petrol amd im starting to agree. Sounded a little healthier at high rpm.. maybe.. coulda just been my imagination aswell. Either way ive decided a new cam is a better way to spend money than a new mixer :)

I guess most of gas's 'performace' deficiencies come from is lagged delivery and all mixer systems suffer from it.

Air Rod offers a 'variable' mixer which expands to over 65mm I believe. Still getting details. I'm probably going to fit this to my 185KW V8.
