The idea is they are less of a restriction - that is the engine can suck air through it easier. Less restriction means more air and therefore more power.
This should give you more power and better fuel economy. In reality there are very small gains, and the filters dont filter as effectively as the standard paper ones (so more dirt in your engine).

I got a k&n panel filter and to be honest there isn't much difference then compared with a brand new valvoline one.
I noticed a big gain when k&n first installed because the paper filter was really dirty. I got a new paper filter in on of those valvoline supercheap packs where you get oil filter, air filter, oil wrech and pan. Anyway stuck the new paper filter in and didn't notice any real difference. The paper one rubber edges actually seal better than the k&n one. cheers........ |

Yeah the higher flow rate does practically nothing to a stock NA engine.
Waste of money IMO, which is why I've never bought one. |

Wicked, my K&N is screwed, my fault cause i bashed it against concrete to get bugs and crap out! Might just replace it with a standard one.

K&N etc., flow almost no better than stock filters. Maybe if you need an extra fraction of a kw, as in a drag car, then there might be a differenc. For a road car, stick to std filters, they're a bloody sight cheaper!!!
