Out of curiosity, does anyone know what else is in the charging circuit on our cars apart from a wire going from the alternator to the battery +12v?

it connects to the battery via a fusable link iirc

Do you know if that fusible link is the little blue rectangle thing under the coolant tank?

Actually I think it's in one (or two) of those connectors that go to the battery terminal, there's about 4 of them.
From what I can gather they are the one's with the Yellow->Black wires. Is this correct? I better check those before I replace my alternator! Although I am still curious as to what the little blue thing is, I think it's a diode, for god only knows what... |

Can you post a photo of it?
The fusible link is just a piece of cable about 200mm long which is like a weak link that burns out if overloaded. There are several attached to the positive terminal.

there are to types of alternators, internal and external regulator types. most cars these days are the internal type. they have two wires, 1 to 12v+ and the other runs to the battery charge lamp.

the two wires on the reg are labeled S and L(written on reg). the S (stands for Sensing) wire runs to the battery and in theory senses the voltage required to maintain full voltage. the L(light) runs to the charge light.
if u'r in doubt whether or not your alternator is charging, connect your volt meter between the the B+ terminal of the alternator(bolt on wire) and earth. if it's charging there and not the battery then u have a dud connection between the two. if the sensing wire is dud then the alternator will be charging flat out regardless of where u measure from

Well it turned out that my alternator died.
I just had to replace it. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't a fuse or something before I replaced the whole thing. And I can't bloody find my multi-meter.....makes life difficult lol. |
