just kicking around the idea of doing some custom coloured tripcomps like my one, backlighting is LED and is non reversible - buttons only light up very feintly but screen colour is smooth and very nice.

price would be about:
$20 for RED and YELLOW
$22 for GREEN
$25 for WHITE
$30 for BLUE (why blue ultrabrights are 4* as much as any other colour beats me)

ill see if i can find a cheaper source to get these LED's from if people are interested, Just start a list with your name and the colour you want and ill see what i can do

lol, if anyone can do it the way the tech doco shows that actually turns out as nice as mine ill eat my shorts.

price is for VERY low volumes, but if everyone wants the one colour the price drops sharply, this also includes return postage and my time (what you didnt include the cost of time in your estimate tim?)

Id say thats a pretty good deal, i dont trust my own electrical skills and paying someone to do it for me is good.. especially when its cheap.

The one I did turned out awesome, I actually did it a while before you did yours with about 4 LED's mounted inside on various angles.. But then when you posted up how you did yours I modified it a bit - and I got the far edges of the screen to light up nicely.

But these days I reckon you could buy the wide angle 1W coloured LED's and they'd do a good job.

i was lookign at the 1W led modules - $8.95 each for the cheapo jaycar ones, depending on the size, i could even work them into a direct replacement for the globe - i will investigate further, the prices on this type would be a lot less since the time taken to build would be minimal and people wouldnt need to send me their tripcomp

For anyone interested this is whats involved in lighting a tripcomp with LED's (note - 2 things have changed in the way that i did this 1: LED's are now in parralell with each other and all have a resistor to limit current 2: there are no longer induvidual 3mm LED's to light the buttons) - and my website is helluva out of date now, i havnt had the time to go through an De-Dorkify it

what size and MCD rating?, im using jaycars pricing for LED's because i only need low volumes of these things, if it ends up worth my while id just order a s**t of the things from HK for 1c each!

forgot to mention that i havnt actually had an EF/EL tripcomp apart, so i dont know if its possible to do them my way anyone got pics of the guts of one?

EA-ED digital dash shouldnt be a prob, but remember that you will still have yellow lighting for the rest of it (because you cant put lighhting into the EA-ED clusters like you can with the later ones)

you can if the LEDs are bright enough. EA-ED clusters are face AND backlight. So if you block the path that the light uses to light the face, and the LEDs are very f**k bright, you can achieve a similar effect to later clusters

I managed to get a few bits of the digital dash blue but the speedo and tacho etc are too big.

i know, i did it to the light up rear demister button in my car, it took one 5000MCD LED about 4mm away frm the back of it to light up blue, i wouldnt want to know how many LED's it would take to do a whole cluster that way!
