My fairmont Ghia has been lowered using monroe GT's and king (low's maybe??) the fuse to the SLS has been pulled and the linkage to the watts links has also been disconnected.
My questions are- How does the SLS work? are the original shocks part of the system? Can i put a switch in line so that if i want i can turn the SLS on even though my car is lowered? |

Need special shocks for SLS, and you'll find yourself frequently replacing them.

so the SLS pump pushes the shocks to raise the car? I thought it was just the linkages

they are different shocks. its possible if you didnt lower the car, it was done due to the compressor being buggered. it is cheaper to replace shocks then the compressor

how can i test the compressor?
can anyone think of alternative uses for the compressor before i pull the whole system from the car? |

I thought SLS was only available on Fairlanes and LTDs?
If you've lowered the car, why would you want to have the SLS on?

nope my fairmont ghia has it.
does the SLS level it out front-rear or side-side? I wanted to be able to switch it on to get a bit more clearance when needed |

its front-rear, stops the a*** dragging effect when the car is loaded up

The SLS ECU (on the diff) monitors rear ride height via the linkage. The ECU controls the compressor (mounted behind the right hand front wheel) which pumps/releases air to raise/lower the air shockers.
If the compressor and ECU are still ok then you could replace the shockers with new "pump-ups" and have functioning SLS again - should be OK with King lows (approx. same height as TVE springs ) but not super-lows. Self Test procedure: Sit in drivers sear with door open Turn ignition on then off again Turn ignition back on Press the door pillar courtesy light switch three times within one second The self test will execute - normally the car would raise and lower and then display any error codes on the cluster SLS warning lamp. Not having the correct shocks and the link disconnected will upset things but the compressor should still run..

cheers for that, I tried it out today and it worked, the "check suspension light only came on whilst the compressor was running then went off and stayed off. the compressor still works by the sound of it
Alternative uses anyone? |
