G'day, just did a conversion to C4 auto from 3 speed manual. Currently I'm installing the auto speedo cable. The speedo cable connects to the C4 on the passengers side. What I need to know is the route of the cable from the firewall to the gearbox. I know it comes out below the booster.... but does it follow up the contours of the gearbox tunnel to the passengers side? Or does it follow the floorpan and cross over underneath the rear of the gearbox? I can't find any reference in the manuals. Any help would be appreciated.

C4's and manual g'boxes use a different gear on the end of the speedo cable. I stripped my gear when I swapped in a toploader to replace the c10. Use the correct speedo gear to suit the 3spd.

C-series gearboxes use one type of gear.
Borgwarner gearboxes use another type of gear, manual and autos.
Toploaders use another gear again.

In my car I belived that the C4 gear would suit the toploader...
Stripped the teeth of the gear within 600m.
Ended up using a modified borgwarner gear. has been in the car for over 12 000km now, and hasn't missed a beat.

All borgwarner boxes use the same type of gear, just different numbers of teeth to suit various diff ratios. Gears are identified by the colour of the gear. eg green, brown purple, grey or black.

If you have a C4, then track down a C-series gear. Even C3 gears work (4 cyl autos).
Will try to take pics 2morrow after work if I can find where I keep my spares...

What Gearbox is in your rig Vik?

Also FMX's use a different gear again!

Should be able to track down new or replacement gears through your local Ford spare parts div. or Rare spares. Ford could only get me 1 gear for my toploader, and it didn't even have the correct number of teeth for my diff gears. $90. Rare spares had one with the correct number of teeth, brand new $40-$50!

what you guys will find is that the gear colours will be the same ,it depends witch side of the extension housing the gear goes into.

If u guys read correctly, he is after the ROUTE of the cable rather than the number of teeth.

The cable runs across the top of the gearbox and curves back to the box from the gearbox mounting crossmember :D
