Firstly i dont condone breaking the speed limit but....
Today i installed an EF XR6 ECU and XR fuel reg into my EF gli.
ECU works great eg:shift points and alittle more torque. But when i was on the freeway tonight i gave it a little boot and the speed limiter cut in at around 165-170km rather than 180km the standard ECU does.
I gave it a little thought and came to the conclusion that the ECU is setup for a 3.45 diff ratio. But why would the ECU change the speedo?Doesnt that run off the speed sender unit on the gearbox?
And what speed am i really doing then?

The EEC cannot change the speedo.
The EEC thinks you are going faster than you actually are because your diff ratio and speedo gear are not the appropriate ones for this EEC. In other words; you are getting too many pulses per kilometer. You can either get the correct speedo gear and diff ratio or get one of those digital speed adjuster kits from Jaycar and spit this pulse into your EEC.

Hi nathan.I went to my local ford dismantlers and keyed up an XR diff with speed sensor. The black one with 22 teeth from memory. That should sort it out hopefully.

I had a quick look on the speed calc.
I have 3.08 diff and 17s
I done the calc based on 15s with 3.08
compared to 17s with 3.45 i picked the black 23 and the speedo was only .38km out so i think ill put the black one in when i get the 3.45 diff.

Was it an ECU from a sedan XR6, or a wagon XR6 or Fairlane.

From my experience with EL ECUs, the LWB ECUs are limited to 170KM/H. SWB limited to 180, and the cop ECU limited to 220KM/H

In short no the ECU won't (and can't) change the speedo, the ECU get's it speed reading from the cluster/dash.

I got it out of a sedan. When my speedo was way out it would hit the limiter between 170 & 180
