I normally only haunt the Exterior Mods forum, so excuse me if I'm going over old ground, but has anyone had any experience of converting 302s (in my case in an AU ute) over to LPG.
Petrol cost and the new subsidy are tempting.......

I'm doing my AU Lane right now Bob, but i've had LPG powered cars since 90 so i know it's definately going to be worth it.

My girlfriends old man had a 5.0l au on gas.

Seemed efficient as he was travelling quite a few k's for work.

Something worth contempkating as the fuel$$$ keep rising

Hi Bob,
I converted my EL 302 to gas, and the sort of figures I get are
540km out of 68L of LPG, mainly highway trips. Around town about 450-480km.

With the current prices, it works out to be about 7.5 cents per KM. When I worked out the petrol cost it was about 15c per KM. So thats half the running cost. It runs great on gas, has never backfired either.

In terms of power it is hardly noticeable, and if I'm overtaking at over 100km/h I switch over to petrol just to get that extra bit of power.

You can't go wrong!

What setup are you running ELV8?
Could you take some pics of your mixer and convertor setup?

I'm still tossing up on what mixer to use, i found a performance mixer but they're out of stock and are not making anymore.

I didn't want to go with a basic spud mixer but will for the time being until i either find a decent performance one or make my own.

Walker I've got an OMVL converter and a sprintgas mixer. It has its own learning computer etc and is wired into all the sensors. The mixer does restrict the intake by about 15-20mm but performance decrease is hardly noticeable. If I had an explorer manifold, 65mm throttle body etc I'd consider a bigger mixer, but with the standard setup its fine.

It all fits under the bonnet quite nicely, and can still get to all the sparkplugs. I've seen some setups where heater hoses are everywhere, but I took the time to hide most of that along the firewall.

Can't take any pics for a couple of weeks because I'm away, but will do when I get back.

Ah no probs, that's pretty much the same setup as what i'm running.
I'm almost done, but need another washer bottle as i mounted the convertor in it's place.

Hi Bob,
no worries. Yes all the conversions that have been talked about are dual fuel systems. I don't see any point in converting to straight LPG with a perfect working petrol system. Plus you can run your LPG tank dry and be able to get to a service station on petrol (which keeps the petrol system going).

However if you were to go down the Straight LPG path then your best bet would be to get the dual tanks off a dedicated LPG AU/BA 6 cylinder ute, and even with 2 tanks underneath you get the spare under their too. Theres probably a way to get one tank underneath (parallel to the diff, and on the other side to the petrol tank if you were to go the dual fuel way. With the twin LPG tanks, you can get about 100L into it so thats a fair range if the system is tuned properly. The factory dedicated LPG utes say they're just about empty when there is still about 15L of gas left. This is to try and prevent drivers running out of gas and having to get towed. (although I have seen someone with a pipe with the right fittings from a BBQ bottle that uses it as a jerrycan if he runs out - highly illegal)

If you're going to go down the path of LPG the main issue would be the spare. I've heard a number stories from LPG ute drivers who have got a flat tyre and havent had the spare in the tray, and they have to ring someone to bring out a spare to suit their vehicle! Ideally you'd have it underneath with a few modifications to fit the tank AROUND the spare.

I have to be honest, i have found the Impco systems to be nowhere as good as the complex convertor/simple mixer setups.
The Impco is good at feeding, they tend to run rich and getting a perfect tune is almost impossible.
The setups we have are far better in the way of economy and power IMHO.
Mine should be all hooked up by Wednesday Bob, i'll get some pics for you on the setup, will be handy with yours being an AU aswell.

As I've posted a few times before, this is what I'm runnin on my EB 5.0L & as I've also said before I do EXACTLY the same lap times at Wakefield on petrol & on LPG (even without the mixer ring while burnin 98ron).

That's only the Lambda setup which are much of a muchness mate.

The real key is convertor and mixer setup!

Landi have always been good for the 6 upto XF, their convertor and mixer setups aren't much chop for an 8.
