EL is basically the old ea-ed ecu (3 rows with 20 odd pins in each IIRC). Ef has 4 row 104 pin.

so does this mean that the ef el ecu is the same as the ed ecu? because the ef el has eec v and the ed is eec iv :?

Ef and EL ecu's are very differnt. From memory, ED are EEC4, EF is EEC5, EL is EEC5 in an EEC4 case.

Couple of assumptions here, your car is an EL falcon, and you got your info off the ECU sticker, and the ECU is the original ??
If your ECU has these catch codes (or similar), 6TGE, 96DT-12A650-GE, then you are running an EL Tickford LPG ECU.
The sticker will say EEC IV, not quite sure why, as it is an EEC V ECU in every respect, except it has LPG spark maps as well. The EF Tickford LPG ECU has EEC V on it strangely enough.

im not totally sure if it is the original ecu, as it was a taxi with a three speed auto in it, which i changed and the engine is now an au series 1 with all au series 1 internals, with el wiring looms, it also has a 3.08 diff which ive been told is from a v8? i may be wrong but thats what the plate on the diff says

the code on the ecu is definitely 6tge 96dt12a650 ge, for some reason i thought it might have been out of an ef because im finding more things that are making it a bitsa car

96dt is a 1996 tickford part, so is either xr6 or more likely an LPG ecu from an EL. Given that it had a 3 speed auto it is possible it was switched for a manual ecu as well.

but yeah, its an EL ecu.

if there is a chance it was a manual ecu, should i get another ecu that is definitely for an auto?

Your current ECU is for an auto (BTR 4 speed that is).
