Any ideas what a fair price is for an Opptima Bluetop? Reason I ask is I walked into this battery joint yesterday and asked the guy and he said he doesn't keep them, but can get them and off his head possibly as low as $290.00. Went to the next joint and they keep them, but $380.00...
I know there's 1 other place that can get them so am going to ring them this afternoon as can't be bothered driving all the way out there, and am going to go back to the first place and get the guy to give me a definate price...

Blue top/Yell top...doesnt matter both are deep cycle and gonna do the job...most who own em wouldnt be drawing the current these batteries produce....Unless you go the 1000cca blue top ....it wont matter which D34 u go the yellow or blue top.

The CCA value wont help with ya stereo as that the COLD CRANKING AMP rating...this is just the amount of current that CAN BE initially delivered if needed....hence starting a car...after that the car off or watever with the system running it goes of the CA value.....but if ya gonna be paying $300 it wont matter....you probably wont get any were near that sort of current draw.

If you go to the website you can read all about them, and there differences.
Basically, you have the yellow top which is deep cycle and good for motorhomes and what not drawing power when there's nothing recharging it, but they are actually a s**t battery for starting - even Optima show that, they have a graph of the red top vs yellow top vs standard battery - and the yellow top provides less starting power (only just) than a standard battery after the first 5 seconds (prior to that it provides just slightly more). The red top is in a different leage, the amount of power it provides is significantly more.

The blue top is designed for marine use, the advantage of using a blue top battery over either a red or yellow top is it is far more vibration resist (according to Optima 15 times), due to the fact that there designed for boats that are getting pounded by waves, which would hopefully result in longer battery life!
Now the blue tops come in two forms, deep cycle like the yellow top and a starting form like the red top.

http://www.optimabatteries.com.au/

The main reason for using a deep cycle is when you need the battery to be the sole provider of power, or the alternator is not capable of generating as much power as what's being drawn.

So anyone know p[rices?

Yeh for the D34 880 or watever CCA version ya lookin at $350-$375rrp.

And the yellow tops can with stand a f**k of vibrations....Im yet to have a deterioated or dead cell as yet with the current optima D34 I have in a 3 battery setup...and its got 4x 12" subs pumpin right on top of it.

Also used it as the main starter for my car...never had a problem....unless you dont start the car for more than bout 2n half weeks....as they sit at half charge......so starting after long periods canbe an issue...im sure the red and blue tops are the same tho.

yeh and obvioulsy theres risks assosciated with used batteries and ebay items...not everyone would have cells tested etc....why new is normally the go but yeh might score a good used one on the cheap...but expect the $350+ mark for retail. I know at least 2 outlets here in Canberra that sell em for that figure roughly...give or take a smidge

They actually come in 4 or 5 forms but yeh ....the main ones that are worth the money is the D34 equivalent with 800+ CCA rating and the higher model (forget the part number ) that has over a 1000CCA rating

Both these are overkill for most ppl systems

There 5 different shaape/sizes avaliable yes, but only two different forms, starting and deep cylce.

I just got home with mine, shelf price was $370.00, but he (bloke at Battery World I think it was) gave it to me for $330.00 - don't know why I didn't even haggle. They seem to be the only place in town selling them, everywere else seems to bee ablee to get them, but are vague on pricee and details and don't get back to you.

yeh alot of regular auto electrician and reg battery distributors dont know too much about the hig performance battery lineups just that there good lol .... really have to go to specialist dtributors or talk with optima etc direct then have a battery mob ya know wont rip ya off order one in.
