Hi guys,

My car has been experiencing some problems when running on warmer days. I get a rough idle and coolant leakage. I can't identify where the leakage is coming from though it is possibly leaking from two separate spots. Like I said this only appears to be occuring during warmer days. Ive checked the engine oil and it appears to be fine. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Could be leaking around the thermostat housing. Seems fairly common to have a leak there when hot. Water pump could be failing....

What about the rough idle when hot? Any likely causes for that?

water could be leaking at a few places - heater tap, heater lines, o'ring at water pump, water pump, radiator, hoses, thermostat housing, heater core, header tank.

water escaping into the pistons via blown head gasket could be one problem for the rough idle.
check plugs and leads first, but it could be the coil ready to call it quits.

Get the cooling system pressure tested and also a teekay check, basically it's a chemical that picks up exhaust gases in the cooling system.

btw its a ED auto.


although its its going to the extreme, your rough idle may be a symtom of a blown headgasket, they are known to leak internally... I normally wouldn't say this if you didn't mention the rough idle.

Thats only a worst case scenario, check for a chalky residue around your engine, (thats what happens what coolent evaporates)

As Fordz said, coolant being pressurized and leaking into the cylinder due to a blown headgasket would explain the rough idle and why you cant identify where the coolant is going. They normally go at number 5 cylinder on the exaust side.

A quick test for this, so long as you have coolant and not just water in your cooling system, is to smell the exhaust. If it smells sweet then coolant is burning and you have a leak into the cylinder.

Now don't go a sick your face up to the exhaust and take a good whiff, cause you're likely to pass out. You should be able to smell it just by walking around the vehicle.

As i stated above, pressure test the cooling sytem and fix any leaks, then do the chemical test to see if you have any exhaust gases in the cooling system.

Although they don't always find your problem, sometimes a pressure test actually pushes against rad tanks etc and seals the leak.

A radiator place would charge $20 max to check your sytem, most times they don't even charge.

Oh man you guys got me worried :cry: I was hoping that it may be something less serious like the idle speed controller. Anyway taking it to the mechanic to have it checked out...

Just to clarify I can see the coolant leaking onto the ground I just don't know where the leak is coming from. Also the rough idle only occurs during warm weather, I would have thought that a blown headgasket would cause rough idle all the time.

That location would suggest drain tap or bottom radiator hose. Could also be water pump with the water dripping onto crossmember and then dripping onto ground but not as likely as the other two.

Try doing up the drain tap a bit tighter. and which you ahve your head under there check the bottom hose. Give it a good squeeze and see if water escapes.
