what exactly does the ecu control? i just changed mine and was trying to reteach it, i now have working wipers and aircon, aswell as the fuel lid release, whereas i only had headlights and thermo fans before, smartlock light is still dim but still no click from the starter or anything mechanical, is there more to my dilemma?

hmmm i would of thought all those things were controlled by the BEM except for some functionality in the air conditioner. ECU controls basically everything in the engine bay and sends signals to the dash etc but mosty all those signals go via the BEM if you have probelms i would look into changing ure BEM

doesn't the bem ultimately function as a subset of the ECU? or does it work independantely.

Exactly.

The BEM sends a signal to the ECU telling it that everything is ok security wise. If not it kills the injectors and if there are big problems like the ignition barrel if f**k it kills the starter motor.

The BEM is also responsible for everthing on your dash, like demist, int light, wipers, and all that crap.

For example if u have a fairmont and u want to wash the window the u pull it for 1 sec and it will work for a few seconds. In a GLi it will only be on as long as you pull it.
