When changing the HO manifold on the EL 5L V8 (165kw version) to the later Explorer/AU manifold (185kw version), is it absolutely necessary to change the injector size and MAF or not, can the standard set-up (19lb injectors and 55mm MAF) be used safely ? If so, would there be a significant difference or would you have to adapt a larger MAF and the 24lb injectors ?

The EL Series 2 XR8 had a 55mm MAF and 19lb injectors, quite safe. It had the AU motor (minus 70mm MAF and GT40 heads)

19lb injectors will be fine, however if you wanted to change the size of maf to get a bit more air in there it will help a little.

Just changing the manifold on its own will still feel loads better than stock.

Would an explorer/elxr8 II intake work ok with a set of GT40X's?

I don't know much about the GT40X's but I would say a manifold something a little better flowing would be more desireable......take a look at the trickflow and edelbrock range, or try and track down a T series intake.

My limited budget has me going down this road at the moment (i.e. explorer intake on GT40X heads).

The cross section of the intake ports on the GT40X are much larger than the explorer lower intake.

There is a bit of scope to modify the lower intake though. The cross section of the runners tapers down alot from the top part (of the lower intake) to where it meets the heads.

I've got all the dimensions written down at home, I'll post them up tonight if you like.

windza - slap the manifold on.. you dont need the big injectors or maf just yet.

Thanks guys... that's all I wanted to know... I'm not chasing big numbers, just little more to punt the big 'lane a little quicker. I'll see if I can chase one up.
