man im still confused with all this 235/40/18s what not thing......i just did a search because it was annoying me....and being me i know i have asked the question before but i forgot.

now i know 235 is the width....is that the width of the tyre in millimetres? 40 being the aspect ratio so 40% of the width is the profile. and obviously 18 being the radius.....

now what i don't get is that 235 is 9 inches......i thought cars only had 6.5 - like 7 inch wide rims?

could someone clarify what the 235 means?

235 is the width of teh TREAD FACE in mm.

You can fit different width tyres onto different width rims (within reason).

eg. I've got 235 wide rubber on an 8" wide rim. It's the correct size. Because the sidewalls add width to the tyre, but isn't counted because the measurement is of the tread only. I could also go 245 or 255 wide rubber without being crazy. Going narrower 225 or 215 will be easily possible, but would look funny, like they were stretched on.

18x8 wheels from Ford/Holden come with 245's, 17x8 come with 235's I have XR6 wheels 235's on em, but I will be changing them to 245's when I get new tyres. I would recommend 245's, 255's if you want em fatter.
